General Information
Wildlife Sightings, Photography & Expectations
Please be aware, that we are unable to guarantee any wildlife sightings while attending our tours. But we do guarantee, that you are at the right place at the right time to have the highest chance in the world to see certain marine mammals and other wildlife.
May, June and early July are a great time to view humpback whales, white sided dolphins, sea lions and dalls porpoises. As well as black bears, bald eagles, minkes, martens, deer, elk and squirrels.
July, especially August is prime time orca season until early September. As salmon is running full force back into the rivers, the Northern Resident Killer Whale are more present, come close to shore to rub their bellies, socialize, feed and play or simply sleep.
If it is your life long dream to see orcas in the wild, then July, but especially August is your very best chance to do so. And again, there is no guarantee, as they are wild animals. But out of over 20 years experience, mid July and all August are the very best time for killer whale sightings, sometimes even right from our beach as we are one of their many rubbing beaches.
We have been working as land-based whale watching & kayak guides since 2004 in this particular area. Being quit when orcas appear, is key to a great whale sighting. Yelling, screaming, or running over the beach to get closer to them, will most likely disturb them and they will disappear. We highly recommended, for best wildlife sighting results, stay calm but most importantly stay were you are and enjoy.
Our clients occasionally expressed frustration in the past that their sightings did not turn out the way they had hoped. The whales were too far away, or the images they took are too blurry, or it just didn’t look quite like what they wanted.
For wildlife photography and wildlife sightings, and especially whales as they are rules and regulations how close we can approach them, a good telephoto lens is required for getting up close shots without disturbing the animals. In many countries including Vancouver Island in Canada, we must maintain a certain distance from a whale or group of whales, orcas, dolphins and other marine mammals.
The priority of any whale watching trip, should always be the animals safety and comfort – watching orcas and other whales from shore and from a distance when sea kayaking is very rewarding and extremely fun, with the added bonus of knowing you are not disrupting them as they go about their daily lives.
Kayaking
Kayaking may be limited due to weather conditions. If you are looking for a kayak expeditions, this is NOT the right trip / company for you. Kayaking is only a small part of this trip, but not it’s main focus. Kayaking is also optional, and not a must. Just an incredible activity to add to your orca dream adventure tour on Vancouver Island! Who knows, you might be even on the water with killer whales while trying out a new hobby?
